The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ordered Pfizer Inc. to stop marketing Viagra, the active ingredient in the erectile dysfunction drug, to men who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
The drug’s label states that it has not been linked to any health problems or death.
Pfizer did not immediately return calls seeking comment. The FDA has yet to receive a definitive response from the company. The FDA has said that there are no concerns of Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, but there is a risk of death from Alzheimer’s if the drug is not used as recommended by the manufacturer.
“The FDA’s actions are unacceptable and should be considered with the full-time post-marketing monitoring of pharmaceutical companies,” the FDA said in a statement. “We will continue to monitor the safety and efficacy of Pfizer’s product to ensure continued safety and efficacy.”
Viagra’s maker, Eli Lilly, has said the drug is safe to use in men and women.
The drug, which is sold under the brand name Revatio, has been linked to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
